You know, a few months ago this dude friend of mine showed up to hang out with me all dejected. Over a couple of drinks he explained his long face — earlier that night, he’d been walking down the street behind this really cute girl, and when she looked back at him over her shoulder, he thought it was in interest and smiled at her. Now, this guy is tall and skinny, can most commonly be found in glasses and t-shirts scrawled across with math jokes, is kind to animals, considers himself a feminist. What he doesn’t consider himself is threatening, so he was surprised, confused, and even hurt by what happened next: the girl in front of him responding to his called greeting of, “Nice skirt,” by taking off down the darkened street in a dead run.

“Yeah,” I said, “she probably thought you were going to rape her.”

“But that’s not fair,” he said. “I’m a good person; I’d never rape anyone! How could she think that? She doesn’t even know me.”

Out here in the wilds of the internet, I often find myself making arguments about shit like feminism and rape culture unilaterally. For one thing, there’s so much (like, so much) out there arguing unilaterally against this shit that I feel it’s necessary; for another thing, ‘round these parts there’s a lot of people jumping to hostility when it’s painfully clear they don’t have a handle on all the facts. But I’m more lenient with the people in my real life, especially dudes like the one mentioned above. I’m willing to extend to them a patience that I wouldn’t with strangers on the internet, because they matter to me, and it matters to me that they understand. So when my friend sat there that night, whining over his beer and responding to my attempted explanations with, “But I’d love it if a girl smiled at me on the street, or even catcalled at me! Fuck, even if a dude did it, I’d be flattered,” I decided to spend some time thinking about how to clear things up for him. It took awhile, but I finally came up with a metaphor to get the job done:

This really informative and a good metaphor. What I like is that it’s not just a rant of why can’t you see my pov but its someone who took the time to really think about it in order to explain it to someone she cares about. Reading on the internet makes me feel really down about life because people seem to be really intent on airing their grievances (which is so understandable) and not on starting a conversation with the intent of finding solutions.

I’m going to take notes.

That awful moment when you learn that this wasn’t scripted. That Will Smith’s character was actually supposed to brush off the whole thing, but Will’s father actually had left him when he was younger and he just fell apart on the set and the hug at the end was from one actor to another, not one character to another.

except will smith had a great dad who inspired him to be a incredible father to his own kids ( see quote here). His father was a hard-working refrigerator repairman. This scene is incredible not only because it depicted Will Smith’s fantastic acting abilities but because it also depicted the truth of acting tough in the face of abandonment. It’s a scene that tugs at everyone’s heartstring because at some point in our lives we have all wondered why we weren’t chosen.

On the "Gratuitous Carol Marcus Underwear Scene"

So there’s been a couple of blog posts (here and here) that I read regarding the new Star Trek film (which was amazing btw), the character Carol Marcus and women being portrayed in films. Largely, I agree with them. They are right to point out that in a movie that already has few female characters it is important to develop their characters beyond just a static damsel in distress. And nothing I want to talk about in this post is meant to be a counterargument to that. I’m in fact impressed with how the conversation on that is going, with writer Damon Lindelof apologizing on twitter.

The thing I feel gets lost in all this is the “gratuitous carol marcus underwear” scene. A lot people seem to focus on this as the center of the argument. I think that it largely isn’t. In and of itself, Carol Marcus in panties and a bra being ogled by Captain Kirk is not a problem. And I’ll get back to how I feel about it later. The problem I felt was that she was presented as this mysterious smart character who had the potential to be something amazing (like the villain) (yeah I obviously had no background knowledge coming into this movie) and turned out to be this daughter who didn’t know shit and an incompetent scientist (which to be fair is a trait of all scientist on any scifi movie, regardless of gender; I think a great example of how gender doesn’t matter when it comes to be scientific thinkers is the whole crew of Prometheus). Even through the edge-of-my-seat thrill I felt watching the film, I remember thinking, “Dang that female sucks…” And you know that sucks. It sucks that its rare for me to think, “Dang that female got shit done.” (Strangely, I do remember thinking that when Emily Shaw in Prometheus programmed a computer to essentially perform an abortion, with barely any anesthesia affecting her, in order to not die chest-burster style) (And yes I do realize that my thoughts tend towards the colloquial style. I ain’t ashamed). So, I’m totally down with the whole idea of having competent women getting shit done in movies instead of just being there …for no apparent reason (I mean she couldn’t even stop her dad from blowing up the ship).

But on the gratuitous Carol Marcus underwear scene itself, I think that in the heat of the discussion a lot of things get dismissed or overlooked. What most people seem to feel is that this scene sexualized a woman for no reason accept fan service. And I think that misses out on what the scene is meant to do and also what I, as a woman can get out of it. So here are some things I liked about the Carol Marcus underwear scene:

1. Revelation of how deep the flaws of Captain Kirk go. I think a problem people highlighted is that Carol Marcus in her underwear doesn’t serve herself, but Captain Kirk. And they’re right. The scene largely reveals characteristics about Captain Kirk. We find out, something we already knew, that he’s obsess with women. But now we know that its to the point that he would risk a sexual harrassment charge for a quick peak. (I realize though that I basing this off of memory, so it could be that he didn’t know she was changing and was shocked that she was). Either way, he had to be ordered to turn around twice, which means that his focus is shot when it comes to women. And that’s a problem that gets exploited later on in the movie when he chooses not to stun (and get shit done) Carol’s father in order to preserve his already tarnished image in her eyes.

2. Revelation about the world JJ Abrams imagines. So I’m always sort of interested in the world building that occurs in scifi movies. Because movies focus on one plot, world building often comes in glimpses or through interpretation of smaller events. In scenes where men and women are not fully clothed and not having sex with each other, I’m always interested in their interactions. For example, in BSG, they’re were plenty of scenes where men and women showered freely together, uncaring of each other’s nudity. The same was true of Starship Troopers. I had thought, based on Uhura and Kirk’s underwear scene in the previous film, that modesty wasn’t a big thing in the Star Trek future. But, this scene in which Carol is obviously very protective of her modesty, reveals that it still very much a value in this future society. And that could be your thing or not, but it is, I think, an important revelation about how Abrams envisions this future.

3. Revelation of Carol Marcus’ sexiness (Read Fanservice). As a straight woman I can honestly say I enjoyed Carol Marcus sexiness. I mean this sort of thought has its limitations, but it is nice to see a sexy scientist. The idea that all scientist have to be sexy is of course absurd, but honestly, everyone in Star Trek is outrageously sexy. No reason the scientist lady couldn’t be. What’s more is that she had abs which I enjoyed way more than the standard skinny woman.

4. Carol Marcus doesn’t take shit. Now I’m not saying this is a she gets shit done scene. But her deciding to get randomly naked, her expectation that her Captain would respect her privacy, and consequently, standing her ground when he didn’t, is noteworthy. I mean she essentially was like “yeah I’m stripping here instead of in the bathroom. you got a problem with that? No? Well turn the fuck around!” But you know in polite terms because he is the captain. Its nice to see she didn’t just cover herself up shyly. She let it all hang out and got an attitude on her face.

Here is the tl;dr: Carol Marcus’s gratuitous underwear scene has value; just not the value people want in strong female characters. That wouldn’t be so much of a problem if we had more interesting female characters.
